Cruising Kruger: Our Second Visit To South Africa's First National Park

Today we were up at 4:30 a.m. to make sure we were ready to catch our coach for the 15-minute ride to the gates of Kruger National Park.

We were loaded into our touring truck with four other members of our group soon after 6:00 a.m. The day started slowly but as it proceeded we enjoyed some spectacular sightings, including a group of elephants crossing the road who quickly encircled a baby protectively while giving us the hard stare.

We spent some time watching a "mating pair" of lions casually lying in the road. No, we didn't catch them in the act. Our driver-guide was helpful and agreeable throughout the day. For those who haven't been here, the guides radio each other whenever they find good viewing, which no doubt makes for a better experience.

We were back in our room at Hippo Hollow shortly after 3:00 p.m. with the rest of the day off. Tomorrow is a more leisurely 8:00 a.m. start as we wend our way to Swaziland.
