Washington State Highways: The Chains Of Command

We drove over Stevens Pass yesterday.

It was a fine drive, despite earlier weather predictions of up to three feet of snow in the Cascades. The Highways plows had done a great job and there was very little snow to be found. If we hadn't been driving our all-wheel drive RAV4 we would have been seriously annoyed though. Why?

Eastbound cars were required to chain up before driving over the pass. Yesterday's drive would have been absolutely safe with all-season tires. Conditions can change quickly, of course, so the law is understandable.

Still, it was a great day to have all-wheel drive, but not because of the snow.
