Venice is a great place to visit, but you're right, you've got to avoid the tourist hordes. Overnighting there is great. Once the daytrippers leave, the city almost audibly relaxes; the locals come out, and you can wander through the main squares and along the canals absorbing the atmosphere and marveling at the architecture.
